Exciting Joint Research Activity Publication- Advances of 1H–19F CP-MAS-DNP for pharmeceutical formulations

Pharmaceutical research is an excellent  area where solid-state NMR has a large societal impact.

The 2025 PANACEA publication showcases the integration of innovative probe technology with the study of advanced pharmaceutical formulations. It introduces a novel dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) probe leveraging the ^19F nucleus, commonly present in commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), to enable detailed analysis of drug formulations.

The study presents results for a commercially relevant API in both its pure powder form and its formulation within loaded polymeric nanoparticles. By transferring hyperpolarization from ^1H to ^19F nuclei using cross-polarization, and taking advantage of the faster build-up times of DNP-enhanced ^1H polarization, the approach allows for reduced recycle delays and significantly improved sensitivity and efficiency. The unique triple-channel, low-temperature, solid-state DNP-NMR probe—with independent radiofrequency channels for ^1H and ^19F—permits separate pulsing and superior acquisition of fluorine spectra in terms of sensitivity and resolution.
