Workshop on solid-state NMR methods for pharmaceutical formulations

A hands-on workshop on “Solid-state NMR methods for pharmaceutical formulations” will be held at EPFL from August 30thto September 2nd 2022.


The workshop is open to a maximum of 15 participants and will be focussed on both theoretical and practical aspects of solid-state NMR. It provides excellent opportunity for early-stage researchers (PhD students, post-docs and industrial scientists) to discuss with international experts. The workshop will take place from Tuesday to Friday of the week before the Alpine conference, and it will comprehend four theoretical classes and four hands-on (practical) sessions.


The workshop is open to PhD students, post-docs and industrial scientists who are already familiar with solid-state NMR techniquesand intend to expand their knowledge and skills in terms of more advanced methodology or specific applications in pharmaceutical sciences. The workshop will include a state-of-the-art overview of the recent field of NMR crystallography, as well as hands-on tutorials for the computation of NMR parameters in solid samples. The course is aimed at targeting both scientists who wish to incorporate computational methods in their analysis and theoretical chemists who want to integrate NMR into their research.


The four theoretical lessons will cover the following topics:

  • NMR crystallography (Pinelopi Moutzouri – École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne)
  • 1H and 13C assignment methods (Ann-Christin Pöppler – Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg)
  • The needs of the pharmaceutical industry (Anuji Abraham – Bristol-Myers Squibb)
  • Computational methods (Gregory Beran – University of California, Riverside)


The 15 participants will be divided into smaller groups rotating through a series of hands-on exercises aimed at solving problems related to pharmaceuticals with solid-state NMR. Each team will be accompanied by an expert “coach” that follows them through the whole three day trajectory, giving them advice, expertise and mentorship. The experts who have agreed to play this role are Prof. Anne Lesage (CNRS Lyon), Prof. Aaron Rossini (Iowa State University), Dr. Giulia Mollica (Aix-Marseille Université) and Dr. Arthur Pinon(University of Gothenburg).
